Yoga for Real Life — Grounded, Accessible, and Deeply Transformative

Dr. Ronald K. Porter is a yoga teacher, scholar, and community builder dedicated to helping individuals cultivate balance, awareness, and well-being through yoga, mindful movement, and reflective practice. In a fast-paced world, he believes these practices invite us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what truly matters — body, mind, and spirit.

His journey with yoga began in 2011 and deepened through formal training and certification in 2012. For over 13 years, Dr. Porter has been teaching yoga and guiding students in cultivating balance, awareness, and well-being through mindful movement and reflective practice. Today he holds the designation E-RYT 500 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher designation) and remains a lifelong student of the practice.

Dr. Porter holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of California, Berkeley and brings a background in higher education, community health, and leadership. Over the years he has taught university courses in the social sciences and education, while also teaching yoga throughout the United States and connecting with students around the world through his virtual practice.

His teaching reflects a simple belief: education and yoga are not about transferring knowledge from teacher to student, but about awakening the wisdom already present within each person. Through movement, breath, reflection, and community, he invites students to cultivate strength, presence, and a deeper relationship with themselves and the world around them.

Through RKPORTERYOGA™, Dr. Porter offers virtual classes, workshops, and continuing education courses, along with select in-person offerings for community, workplace, and event-based experiences—all designed to support personal growth, mindful living, and meaningful connection.

In the end, this practice reminds us of something simple and powerful:

we are the ones we have been waiting for.

Frequently asked questions

A regular routine supports a healthy lifestyle by encouraging a balanced connection between mind and body. Physically, students frequently experience enhanced flexibility, improved muscle strength, better posture, and overall physical vitality. The practice also supports cardiovascular health and metabolic well-being through mindful movement. On a mental and emotional level, yoga is an exceptional tool for daily stress management, helping to promote a sense of inner calm, deeper relaxation, and improved focus.

Note: Yoga is a general wellness practice intended to support overall health and vitality. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult your healthcare provider with any specific medical concerns or before beginning a new physical routine.

Yes. Beginners are always welcome. I provide clear instruction and offer modifications so students of all levels can practice safely and comfortably. The goal is to help you build a practice you can take with you wherever you go.

Virtual yoga brings the sanctuary of the studio directly into your private space, offering ultimate convenience while saving you both time and money. With no driving, traffic, or parking to worry about, you eliminate the stress of a commute and seamlessly reclaim more time for your actual practice and self-care. It fits perfectly into a busy schedule, costs less than a traditional studio commute, and allows you to practice in an environment where you feel completely comfortable. While practicing together in person is a wonderful experience that we will also share, the virtual option provides an accessible, highly flexible way to build a consistent daily routine from the comfort of home.

My teaching draws from several yoga traditions, including Basic Yoga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Yin Yoga, and Pranayama (yogic breathing practices). At times classes focus on one particular style, and at other times elements are thoughtfully blended to support breath, movement, and mindful awareness.

Regardless of style, the emphasis of the practice is not on performing poses perfectly, but on connecting movement with breath, cultivating presence, and developing a deeper awareness of the body and mind. Classes are designed to be accessible while still offering depth for those who wish to explore the practice more fully.

Not at all. Yoga is not about being flexible — it is about learning to work with the breath and becoming more aware of the body. Flexibility may develop over time, but it is not the goal of the practice. The real focus of yoga is connecting movement with breath, cultivating awareness, and learning to listen to your body with patience and curiosity. Everyone begins exactly where they are, and the practice grows naturally from there.

No prior experience is necessary. Classes are designed to be welcoming for beginners while still offering options for more experienced practitioners. Students are encouraged to move at their own pace and listen to their bodies.

Yoga is not about achieving a perfect pose — it is about working with your body as it is today. If Downward Facing Dog does not feel comfortable, you will always be offered alternative options such as Child’s Pose, Tabletop, or other supportive variations. The goal is not to force the body into a shape, but to explore movement, breath, and awareness in a way that feels safe and beneficial. Over time, strength, flexibility, and confidence often develop naturally.

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is recommended. If attending in person, please bring a yoga mat. You may also wish to bring water and a small towel.

Consistency is more important than intensity. Even practicing once or twice a week can bring meaningful benefits. Over time, many practitioners find that regular practice helps cultivate strength, balance, and mental clarity.

No. You are welcome to keep your camera off. Virtual sessions are designed to support your comfort and privacy. This is your practice—come as you are and participate in a way that feels right for you.

Virtual classes are offered live and not recorded so students can practice together in real time comfortably. On-demand recordings are also available for those who prefer to practice on their own schedule.
